Laser hair and tattoo removal qualification

Hi there,
I am willing to set up my own small part time business providing Laser Hair and Tattoo removal. As it stands at the minute I do not have any qualifications to do so. Could you please advise me what course I would need to complete to provide this service. I would also like some information (if you have it) to leasing the laser machines and the varies companies that offer this ?
Sorry for all the questions :-)

Reply Hi Kate,
For treatments which include the use of laser machines, you are required to obtain a NVQ Level 4 qualification in laser and IPL treatments. This course will cover hair anatomy, skin types, how laser machines work and you may additionally learn about skin rejuvenation techniques using laser.

Many colleges would hold a different entry requirement for beauty courses. As it stands within our beauty college you would not have to have any prior beauty background in order to be a suitable candidate for a NVQ Level 4 qualification.

It would be in your best interest to study both the NVQ Level 2 and NVQ Level 3 prior to starting the course as this would give you a background view on: beauty contraindications, health and safety, skin conditions, bone and muscle structures. The level 2 course acts as the ground foundation for any beauty course giving you a greater understanding in anatomy and physiology.

You therefore have two options, either to obtain NVQ Levels 2 – 4 or you can jump start straight to the NVQ Level 4. Courses can be structured differently in different colleges. Beaulaz offer fast track opportunities where you can complete your Level 4 in just 8 weeks, this may be different in other colleges.

Level 4 qualifications are normally tailored around hair removal treatments. To learn tattoo removal techniques on top of this, you would have to get manufacturers training directly from the company who you lease your machine from.

As laser machine prices can be very dear many of the major machine providers do offer lease plans. We are currently using the ND YAG laser within our salons. The provider of the machine is Candela. They are commendable company who not only provide affordable lease plans but are also very efficient with machine maintenance. They have their own engineers on the road who travel out to fix your machines should there be any hiccup. Sometimes they can even come down to your salon on the same day as your phone call.

When choosing the right machine to purchase for your company, you need to make sure it suits your requirements. It may be better for you to purchase one machine which is diverse and can treat both tattoo removal and laser hair removal clients. Or purchase the machines separately in order to have two treatments running simultaneously.

You will also need to make sure that it is suitable for the skin type of majority of your clients. The ND YAG laser is the gold standard for Asian and afro-Caribbean clients. Our salons are located where there is a high population of people within the Asian community. If majority of the residents in your salon area are Caucasian you may prefer to purchase an alexandrite laser.

Unfortunately I do not have much knowledge about tattoo removal machines on the market. But I hope this has been helpful.

I would like to start doing laser tattoo removal as i currently do microblading and would like to offer this along with my other services as they go hand in hand.

Do i need certain qualifications to do this? Can i still be trained as level 4 in laser tattoo removal on the day of the course?

Can't wait to hear back from you
